Open Lectures at Doveridge
Village Hall
Sat 6 September |
Programme
4.00pm PRESENTATION: 'Weird Christians: The Church in a Changing
World'.
How do we engage as Christians in a pluralistic, fast-changing,
world? What does it means to love your neighbour when it is frustrating
to even begin understanding them? This talk will throwlight on
our contemporary faith situation to help us be more effective
in mission. 5.00pm AFTERNOON TEA
6.00pm WORSHIP
6.30pm PRESENTATION: Jesus Goes To Hollywood: 100 Years of Celluloid
Saviours (fully illustrated with clips from classic films).
Jesus
films have been notorious for pious depictions of white Jesuses,
usually with British accents. What do these say about popular perceptions
of the Christian faith? And what about more radical depictions
of Jesus? Can they give genuine insight into the historical Jesus?
This exciting lecture by a recognized scholar will be of interest
to those who enjoy film and media, or are interested in contemporary
culture, or are deepening their appreciation of the Christian faith.
Get ready for a fast-paced ride through 100 years of Celluloid
Saviours.
Speaker: Gregory A. Barker, M.Div, BA., PhD.
Greg is the Head
of School of Religious Studies, Trinity College Carmarthen. He
has edited Jesus in the World’s Faiths: Scholars and Leaders
from Five Religions Reflect on His Meaning (New York: Orbis, 2005)
and Jesus Beyond Christianity: The Classic Texts (Oxford University
Press, forthcoming 2009). In addition to writing and lecturing,
Greg teaches future RE teachers in Wales six religious traditions.
