The Bishop's Council

Q. What is the Bishop's Council?

A. It is the body responsible for steering the development of policy and the growth of the Church's work in the Diocese

Q. Who are the members of the Council?

A. The Council is chaired by the Bishop of Derby and its members are drawn from both clergy and lay people.

Q. How are members chosen?

A. Some are appointed directly to reflect their expertise, knowledge or responsibilities. Others are elected to ensure that "grass roots" opinion has a voice in the making of policy.

Q. What are the Council's main functions?

A. It acts as 'Adviser' to the Bishop, giving him a place where ideas can be tested as he leads the Church's work.

It takes a strategic overview of the aims of the Church and recommends appropriate policies.

It promotes good practice and seeks to develop the work of the Church in the Diocese, through local parishes and churches and through specific ministry in areas such as education, social responsibility and industry.

It plans the business of the Diocesan Synod (the Church's equivalent of parliament in Derbyshire).
