Discovering Christianity
My Faith: Sylvia Wood

Since I lost my
husband two years ago, I felt God had let me down and I was
very angry. I asked the
question many times: ‘why have you taken my husband?’,
he had done nothing wrong. But no answer came.
I hadn’t
been a regular churchgoer at that point, although I’d
attended a nearby church with my husband a few years before
he died. After about a year following my husband’s
death, I attended a wedding at a local church and was struck
by how
genuine the vicar was. He wasn’t at all stuffy like
I had expected!
After that I had the urge to go back to church
more regularly. I went to speak with the vicar about how
angry
I was with God, and although he couldn’t give me an
answer to the painful question, he offered me the opportunity
to ask
more about God on the Alpha course. I decided to do the course.
Every week I asked lots of questions and
as each week went by, I grew less angry. Each week I started
to look forward
to going to Alpha, and started to look forward to going
to the church every Sunday. I was ready on the dot each week!
Alpha has helped my Christian faith tremendously and I
feel
ready to be confirmed. I now realise that for a while,
I left God, but he never left me.
